It is the desire of the Government of Malawi to have the highest possible level of health and quality of life for its citizens. Improving the health of the nation through the combined efforts of individuals, communities, organizations, our co-operating partners and the Government is therefore one of the key priorities.
The MoH is committed to ensuring that services in the EHP are available with universal coverage for all Malawians. The signing of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with CHAM facilities for the delivery of Maternal and Neonatal Health (MNH) services is one way of ensuring that the services are accessed by everyone regardless of their socio-economic status. Evidence shows that the removal of user fees in CHAM facilities has resulted in an increase in the number of patients seeking care in these facilities.

The population projections using the 2008 census data reinforce the importance of scaling up interventions to meet the family planning MDG targets. The Total Fertility Rate is expected to remain high and only fall slowly in the next five years if substantial investment is put into additional family planning services. The 2010 Dermographic and Health Survey report confirms the slow increase in contraceptive use. The projected percentage of women aged 15-49 years who will be using any form of contraceptive in 2015 it is anticipated to be 55%, while the MDG target for 2015 is 65% using modern methods.
